What a small run actually means

Small run is one of those phrases that has been used so loosely it has stopped meaning anything. Here is what it means for us, in constraints rather than adjectives.

The material decides, not the plan

We work almost entirely with upcycled leather, sourced as premium offcuts through La Reserve des Arts. Nobody sends us a catalogue. Someone goes and looks, and chooses hide by hide, from whatever is there that week.

That means we cannot decide in January that we will make sixty bags in a particular green in June. If that green is not there, it is not there. The palette is partly ours and partly the result of what other houses happened to leave behind.

One pair of hands sets the ceiling

Every bag is cut, skived and stitched by Tarik, by hand, in Casablanca. There is no version of this where a colour sells well and we suddenly make four hundred more.

That is a genuine commercial constraint, and we would rather live with it than move the work somewhere it could be multiplied. More on that in Tarik, and what a seam carries.

So no, it is not manufactured scarcity

We are wary of brands that manufacture urgency, so it matters to be precise: we are not withholding stock to make you hurry. The quantities are small because of how the pieces are sourced and made, and when a colourway is finished it is finished.

The practical consequence is simple. If you have been thinking about a particular colour for a while, thinking about it for another three months is a real risk rather than a rhetorical one.

What the archive is for

When a line stops, the remaining pieces move to the archive. Limited quantities, no restock, and once they are gone they are gone. It is worth checking, because the archive is where the last examples of a shape usually sit.

Two pieces are never quite identical anyway

Even inside a single run, every hide arrives with its own grain and its own colour, so two bags in the same colourway are close relatives rather than twins. That is not a flaw to apologise for, it is the honest consequence of the sourcing, and it is covered in the leather has already lived once.
