The leather has already lived once

Almost every bag we make starts as somebody else's leftover.

Through our partnership with La Reserve des Arts, we source premium leather offcuts that would otherwise be thrown away. These are not seconds or rejects. They are the ends of hides from houses that work to a very high standard, pieces too small for a large production run and perfectly sized for ours.

Choosing, not ordering

Buying leather this way is nothing like ordering it. There is no catalogue and no repeat order. Someone has to go and look, and choose piece by piece, knowing roughly what the studio needs and accepting that the answer will be partly decided by what happens to be there that week.

It is slower. It also means the palette is never entirely ours to plan. A colour arrives, we design around it, and when it is gone it is gone.

Why no two bags match

Every hide arrives with its own grain and its own colour. Two pieces cut from two different offcuts will not be identical, and two bags in what we call the same colourway can sit slightly apart when you put them side by side.

We could hide that by working with new, uniform leather. We would rather say it plainly: the variation is part of the result, not a defect to be corrected. It is also the only honest consequence of the sourcing.

What upcycling actually saves

The most resource-hungry step in a leather bag is not the stitching, it is producing the hide in the first place. Using material that already exists removes that step entirely from our side of the equation. Nothing about the tanning, the water or the land is charged to us, because it already happened for someone else's collection.

That is a narrower claim than calling a bag sustainable, and we prefer the narrower claim because it is true.

Small runs follow from it

You cannot build a large, endlessly repeatable collection on material that arrives in irregular quantities. Working this way pushes us towards small runs and towards designs that can accommodate a change of colour without losing their shape.
