Choosing your first pair of statement earrings

The most common thing we hear at a stand or in a workshop is some version of the same sentence: I love these, but I could never wear them.

Almost always, the person saying it can. What they are actually worried about is one of three things, and each has a straightforward answer.

Weight comes before size

People assume big means heavy. It does not. A large earring built from light components sits more comfortably through a day than a small dense one, because what your earlobe feels is mass, not surface area.

If you have avoided statement earrings because a pair once dragged on you, the problem was the material, not the scale. Pick up a pair before you judge it by the photograph.

Follow the line of your jaw

The useful question is not what shape suits your face, it is where the earring ends. A drop that finishes at the jawline lengthens. One that finishes above it, at the level of the cheekbone, widens and softens.

Neither is better. But if you know which of the two you are after, choosing becomes a matter of measuring rather than guessing. Hold the pair up before deciding, and look at where the bottom edge lands.

Let one thing shout

Statement earrings are easiest to wear when everything else steps back. A plain neckline, hair off the face or tucked behind one ear, and no necklace competing at the same height.

The other route works too, and is more fun: put a loud pair against something equally loud, and let the colours argue. What rarely works is the middle ground, where three or four medium-strength ideas fight for the same attention.

Start with colour you already own

The first pair is not the moment to buy a colour you have never worn. Look at what is actually in your wardrobe and pick an earring that either matches it or sits directly opposite it on the colour wheel. Both are deliberate. What is not deliberate is a near miss.
